SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Returns to the Bukit Course

“Tommy Tan clinched his first major win at the SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Golf Championship 2017 which concluded yesterday. Firing three impressive rounds of 69 69 and 67 to finish 8-under, Tan smoked the rest of the field and edged out Taipei’s Ting Yu Chen by 7 strokes and Thailand’s Napat Vorrasanpisut by 10 strokes to claim his victory.

A tough year for Tan, his performance has been less than satisfactory, with a disappointing week at the Faldo Series Singapore Challenge held last week at Raffles Country Club.

“Honestly, I didn’t feel that good because I’ve been struggling for almost a year and even missed the cut at the Faldo Series Singapore Champion just last week.”, commented Tan.

But this tournament was Tan’s turning point.

“On the first day I started the first with a double bogey – which did not help my confidence for sure. But I still managed to make a birdie on the second and kept my head up through the round. Closing the first day 2-under par with two doubles was pretty alright.”

Matching his first day score, Day 2 placed Tan one-stroke behind Chen – and his final bogey-free round left Chen in the dust.

“I’d like to thank my parents and my brother for following me on the last day. Their continued support during this period has definitely pushed me to be able to break out of the dry spell and card the best rounds.”, thanked Tan during our interview.

For the Women’s Division, Indonesia’s Ribka Vania claimed her win with 5-under 207 (67, 71, 69), placing Philippines Sofia Chabon 12 strokes behind at second. SGA’s Shannon Tan finished the top local woman, carding 8-over 220 (77, 71, 72) to settle at 4th position, followed by Nicole Mok (5th) and Inez Ng (6th) with 225 and 227 respectively.
