Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship 2022

Round 4

Huang Ting-Hsuan from Chinese Taipei crowned champion at Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship with an impressive eleven-under par score and two shot victory over Thailand’s Natthakritta Vongtaveelap.

Huang Ting-Hsuan from Chinese Taipei emerged victorious at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship (WAAP) 2022 after she shot an impressive final round three-under 69 which included six birdies. She finishes the week with a four-round total of eleven-under par, two shots ahead of Thailand’s Natthakritta Vongtaveelap who carded a final round one-under 71 to finish the event at nine-under par. This win has earned Huang spots to compete in two major championships – the AIG Women’s Open and the Amundi Evian Championship, as well as the Hana Financial Group Championship and an invitation to play in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA).

Singaporeans Aloysa Atienza and Jaymie Ng finished in tied 43rd position after finishing the week with a four-round total of seven-over par. Aloysa carded a final round three-over 75 while Jaymie recorded a final round one-over par 73.  Inez Ng shot a closing round of even-par 72 to end the week with a total of nine-over par, finishing in a tie for 48th position.

“The weekend definitely didn’t go as expected for me,” said Aloysa. “The last 2 days really highlighted some areas I must work on. I hit a lot of good shots this week and gave myself many birdie opportunities but only made one during the weekend. Nevertheless, I’m taking home a lot of positives still, I did well mentally, stayed composed and patient.”

Reflecting on her week, Jaymie shared, “My game was quite stable this week. I feel more confident on the greens and I am striking the ball pretty decently too. I managed to save par quite a lot this week which is crucial to shoot a low round. Last year at this same tournament, I missed the cut by 1 stroke but this year, I made the cut and finished better,” She added, “This event is truly wonderful at giving opportunities to women amateurs in the Asia Pacific region, and it really motivates me to try and qualify for many more WAAPs to come. My upcoming plan is to work more on lag putting (my weakness this week) and train hard for my next tournament, the Singapore Women’s Open in December.”

SGA National Coach Matt Ballard emphasised that he is very proud of the team’s performance in the event, and he is confident that they will come back bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter from all the lessons learnt this week. He expressed, “Hopefully after this week, they are more inspired, and I believe they can contend at this level in major events in this region.  All these ladies are the future of Singapore women’s golf.”

The R&A and the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) have announced that the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) championship’s fifth edition will be held at The New Course at The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) from 9-12 March 2023. Click here to read more.
