Navaporn and Morgan seal win at Singapore Open Amateur Championship
Singapore, July 21: Thailand’s Navaporn Soontreeyapas clinched the ladies’ division title by signing off with her week’s best score of six-under-par 67 for a winning total of five-under-par 287.
Navaporn fended off the challenge from compatriot Achiraya Sriwong, who had led the first three rounds by firing eight birdies against two bogeys for a convincing four-shot victory over Achiraya.
Fresh from winning the women’s team gold medal at the recent South East Asia (SEA) Games, Navaporn has now added another feather to her cap by claiming individual glory.
“The course conditions were perfect today and I’m glad I managed to take advantage of it. This victory is very special as I managed to win it against a strong field. Hopefully, I can continue this winning form,” said the 17-year-old.
Singapore’s Inez Ng and Hailey Loh closed with a 77 and 74 respectively to end their week in a share of fifth place.
In the male division, Australia’s Lincoln Morgan birdied the final hole to deny Malaysia’s Marcus Lim and the Filipino duo of Aidric Jose Chan and Carl Jano Corpus the chance to enter a playoff as his final 70 was enough to secure a one-shot victory over the trio.
“I haven’t been playing well the last few months. So, to be able to win this championship means a lot to me. It’s great to get the confidence back and I really wanted to win this one. This is definitely a big one!” said the 20-year-old, who hails from Brisbane.
Singapore’s Qiwen Wong, meanwhile, signed off with a 73 to finish in tied-11th place alongside Isaac Lam from Hong Kong China.

Morgan goes on scorching run as Achiraya extends advantage at Singapore Open Amateur Championship
Singapore, July 20: Australia’s Lincoln Morgan went on a scorching run despite the inclement weather that disrupted play throughout the day by firing a sizzling nine-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over Malaysia’s Marcus Lim at the Singapore Open Amateur Championship on Thursday.
Morgan marked his flawless card with seven birdies and one eagle to take over the outright lead from Philippines’ Carl Jano Corpus who slipped to third place after posting a 70.
Singapore’s Qiwen Wong, meanwhile, made his move by signing for a 71 to share eighth place with Hong Kong, China’s Markus Lam at the Orchid Country Club.
14-year-old Achiraya Swriwong of Thailand maintained her position atop the leaderboard after carding a 76. The teenager traded six bogeys against three birdies to hold a three-shot lead over compatriot Navaporn Soontreeyapas with her three-day total of two-under-par 217.
Singapore’s Hailey Loh returned with a 74 to trail Achiraya by five shots in third place at the Orchid Country Club.

Achiraya remains in control at Singapore Open Amateur Championship
Singapore, July 19: Thailand’s Achiraya Swriwong held on to her overnight lead despite the challenging pin positions after signing for a second round one-over-par 74 at the Singapore Open Amateur Championship on Wednesday.
The 14-year-old, who opened with a flawless 67, could not replicate her first round efforts but was pleased to be heading into the final 36 holes in pole position in the ladies division.
“It was not easy for me to read the pin positions today. Some of them were tucked into difficult places and I struggled. But having said that, I’m happy I’m still leading this tournament and I’m in a good position for the final two rounds,” said Achiraya, who traded four bogeys against three birdies at the Aranda and Dendro courses at the Orchid Country Club.
Inez Ng and Hailey Loh are tied for third together with Malaysia’s Zi Yu Foong on matching 148 totals.
In the male division, Philippines Carl Jano Corpus posted a 68 to snatch the second round lead with Brandon Han trailing the Filipino by two shots in fourth place.
“I’m happy with my performance the last two days and looking forward to the final two rounds. I want to continue my game plan and hopefully lift the trophy,” said Han.

Jiradech and Achiraya set early pace at Singapore Open Amateur Championship
Singapore, July 18: Thailand’s Jiradech Chaowarat, who clinched the men’s team gold medal at the recent South East Asia (SEA) games, had the spotlight shone on him alone this time around after he set the early pace at the Singapore Open Amateur Championship.
The undergraduate from Sripatum University in Bangkok marked his flawless card with seven birdies to sign for a seven-under-par 66 at the Aranda-Dendro course at the Orchid Country Club.
The Thai holds a slender one-shot lead over Vietnam’s Nguyen Anh Minh and Malaysia’s Marcus Lim after they returned with matching 67s. Brandon Han emerged as the highest-placed Singaporean when he signed for a 69 to end the first round in a share of seventh place together with Isaac Lim from Hong Kong, China, Philippines’ Aidric Jose Chan and Australia’s Lincoln Morgan.
In the ladies division, Singapore’s Hailey Loh trails first round leader Achiraya Swriwong by four shots in second place after carding a 71 (-2). Achiraya carded an impressive bogey-free opening round which included four birdies and an eagle for a six-under-par 67, while Loh made three birdies on her front nine before dropping a shot on her back nine.
Myanmar’s Htun Thurein @ Niki also had a day to remember as he achieved a Hole-In-One on the 8th hole of Dendro after holing an amazing shot from 170m.

International field set for Singapore Open Amateur Championship
Singapore, July 17: The Singapore Open Amateur Championship is set to welcome 113 players from 22 countries as they battle for top honours when the tournament tees off at the Orchid Country Club on Tuesday.
Thailand’s Navaporn Soontreeyapas, who clinched the women’s team gold medal at the recent South East Asia (SEA) Games along with Vietnam’s Nguyen Ang Minh and Malaysia’s Foong Zi Yu are expected to be among the contenders.
Nguyen and Foong secured podium finishes at the SEA Games with their bronze medals at the individual male and female events in Cambodia respectively. Nepal’s Subash Tamang, ranked 136th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) has also confirmed his participation and will be competing this week.
“This is my first time playing the Singapore Open Amateur Championship and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.
“Winning the SEA Games team gold was definitely one of the biggest highlights in my golfing journey so far. Hopefully, I can do well again this week and add another great achievement to my career record,” said the 17-year-old Navaporn.
40 Singaporeans will be in the field where all eyes will also be on Brandon Han, Brayden Lee, Bruce Kwong along with Hailey Loh and Inez Ng to spearhead the local challenge.
“I’m feeling really excited about this event as I have been working a lot on my swing changes during the June school holidays and I feel my golf game is in great shape.
“I try not to set too much expectations on myself. But more importantly, just want to play well and get myself into contention this week,” said Lee, who won the Singapore National Amateur championship in April.
A cut will be made after 36 holes for the top 60 players and ties of each division. They will progress to the third and fourth rounds.
An International Team Event will also be held in conjunction with the Championship. It will be played over the first two rounds of the tournament where each team is represented by two players who are either citizens or permanent residents of the country they represent.
