Singapore, January 25: 15-year-old Chen Xingtong added another feather in her cap by topping the national qualifying tournament to earn her place at the prestigious HSBC Women’s World Championship next month.
The Secondary Four student from Singapore Sports School and a SGA National squad member, outplayed eight of her fellow compatriots with rounds of 70 and 74 for a two-day total of even-par 144 to punch her ticket to the LPGA event which will be returning for its 16th edition at the Tanjong course at Sentosa Golf Club from February 29- March 3.
“I’m very happy to have won this qualifier. I exceeded my own expectations and I’m really looking forward to playing against the world’s best players at the main event next month,” said Chen.
A sterner test awaits Chen as she will face off a stellar field that features the world’s top four ranked players such as Lilia Vu, Yin Ruoning, Celine Boutier and Minjee Lee.
It has been a promising start to the year for Chen. After winning her first international event at the Selangor Amateur Open Golf championship last December, Chen went on to secure a fourth-placed finish at the Philippines National Stroke Play Championship a fortnight ago.
She will be representing Singapore at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) championship next week before teeing up for HSBC Women’s World Championship.
