Singapore Golfers follow up the stellar victory in the Individual event with a Silver Medal in the Men’s Team event to wrap up an unforgettable week of Golf in the 2019 SEA Games
Following the stellar victory by James Leow in the Individual Event, our Men’s team earned a Team Silver medal after a valiant battle in the finals against Thailand. The Singapore Trio of Nicklaus Chiam, Hiroshi Tai and James Leow put up a valiant effort to defend Singapore’s 2017 Team Gold Medal against the Thai Trio of Tanapat Pichaikool, Nopparat Panichphol, & Vanchai Luangnitikul in the Finals.
James continued his spectacular play with a 5&4 victory over Vanchai Luangnitikul, in a round that saw James build a strong lead steadily after being All-Square after 5 holes. Nicklaus Chiam displayed great fighting spirit throughout his match against the Individual Silver Medallist – Tanapat Pichaikool, making the turn 1 down before Tanapat closed off the match on the 16th hole with a 3&2 victory to tie the overall Team Score at 1 point each.
The deciding point boiled down to the match between Singapore’s Hiroshi Tai and Thailand’s Nopparat Panichphol, the Individual Bronze Medalist. Nopparat held the momentum from the onset, mounting a 4 up lead after 9 holes. Hiroshi continued to prove his mettle and fight back to be 2 down with 2 holes to go after a birdie on the 16th Hole, but a stellar par putt by Nopparat from outside 12 feet closed out the match for Thailand to secure the Team Gold Medal.

The Women’s Team Gold was won by the Philippines, with a final score of 1.5 – 0.5 points against Malaysia, whilst Thailand won 2 points against Indonesia to clinch the Bronze Medal. Our Singapore Women’s team did not progress through the Quarter-finals, but the team fought their hardest throughout this 2019 SEA Games and will continue to build on this week’s experiences.
Congratulations to all the winners of the 2019 SEA Games! This week will definitely be recorded as an unforgettable chapter in our Singapore Golfing history, and we would like to thank all the Golf Clubs and Golfers in Singapore for their support given to our team.
Our golfers will keep driving Singapore’s Golfing Journey ahead and continue playing their hearts out, which was a commitment echoed by Mr Ross Tan, President of the Singapore Golf Association, who also shared what a spectacular achievement it was to be a top contender even with a new team from 2017. “With the guidance of Coach Matthew and High-Performance Manager Joshua, I am sure Singapore Golf will continue to grow and strengthen”.
