Team Singapore golfers gained valuable experience at the 116th Malaysian Amateur Open 2018

A total of twelve male golfers consisting of 5 Elite; 5 Development and 2 Overseas Squad members represented Singapore in the 116th Malaysian Amateur Open played at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf and Country Club (SAASGCC), Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur. They competed against over 120 players represented by fourteen different countries.

It is a highly contested tournament yearly and there was no exception to this year’s edition. Witchayanon Chothirunrungrueng from Thailand storms his way to victory with scores of 70,65,64,73 (Total -16) to win by 5 strokes over compatriot Sadom Kaewkanjana (Defending Champion). Witchayanon also achieved the course record with his 64 on the third round. Previously lost in two consecutive play-offs, Witchayanon walked away with a comfortable victory this year and truly a deserving winner.

Top Singaporean performer Low Wee Jin birdied his 72th hole to finish 70,75,73,72 (Total +2). He had recently won the National Ranking Game and Asian Games 2018 Trials. Second best performer was recently crowned MPI Saujana Amateur Champion, Joshua Ho and Abdul Hadi. They finished with a four-day total of 6-over par. Team SG had 11 players make the cut out of 12. It was valuable experience for our Development Squad members and many of our young players showed great promise.

With the school holidays approaching and preparation towards Asian Games, our players will be in full steam for the training and tournaments to come.
