Tommy Tan claims Overall Winner at the Faldo Series Singapore Championship

Tommy Tan clinched overall winner and the Division champion for the Boys Under 21 at this year’s Faldo Series Singapore Championship. He managed to hold off Justin Kuk and Wong Yen Ting by a single stroke to win his second event of the year.

This year’s Faldo Series was a tightly contested affair and was played at the National Service Resort and Country Club, Kranji course. Justin Kuk had a blistering start, shooting a 5-under 67 and Tommy Tan was close behind with an impressive 4-under 68.

A heavy thunderstorm suspended play for two hours during the second round and when play resumed, the two players continued to battle it out for the division championship. This time, Tommy came back to the clubhouse and recorded a 2-under 70 while Justin managed a 1-under 71 to place both players as joint leaders heading into the third round. In the mix for the overall winner title was Wong Yen Ting who is playing some great golf and shot rounds of 71 and 69 to put her at 4-under total and only one stroke behind the leaders.

Tommy Tan eventually had the upper hand in the third and final round when he returned to the clubhouse with an even-par 72 and clinched Overall winner and the Boy’s Under 21 Division Championship. Justin Kuk fought gallantly but shot a 1-over 73 to put him just one shot behind Tommy.

“It feels good to win the Faldo Series qualifier and to play in Vietnam next year. I am feeling confident with my form and hopefully can continue it in the next few upcoming events”, said Tommy after winning his first event of the year.

In the Girl’s Under 21 division, Wong Yen Ting shot another great round of 1-under 71 to claim the title but fell behind by a single stroke to Tommy Tan for the overall winner title. It was a sweet victory for Yen Ting, who fell ill recently midway through the Singapore National Amateur Championship held at Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

Said Yen Ting, “I was feeling confident about my game after two good rounds and I wanted to continue my momentum going into the final round. I stuck to my game plan and am glad that I was able to come away with the win after the round.

Yen Ting who plays collegiate golf at Seattle University in the Pacific North-West in the United States, will now head back there to finish her last year in the University.

“I will be practicing even harder and aiming to play as many events as possible with my team. I want to do the best I can and achieve greater results representing Seattle University in my final year”, said the chirpy 20-year-old.

In the Boy’s Under-16 Division, Sean Lee shot a 7-under 65 to claim the division title and was just three-shots shy of overall winner Tommy Tan.

“I felt really really satisfied after winning this year’s Faldo series. I had been struggling almost the whole of august but i’m glad to win this tournament”.

The three division winners will be representing Singapore in the 13th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in Da Nang, Vietnam next year. We wish them all the best!
