HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 2020 – 3rd Leg cum National Ranking Game

18 March 2021

The third round of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 3rd Leg has come to an end. The players have shown tremendous desire and resilience in the hot sun to overcome the different obstacles, both physically and mentally. Sean Lee and Shang Yu were in blistering form as they blew their opponents away with scores of 218 & 223. Daryl and Jillian also dominated their individual divisions with scores of 220 & 240 respectively. Justin Kuk (214) and Shang Yu clinched the Men’s and Women’s National Ranking Game respectively.

Some thoughts from our winners:

“I am grateful, thankful and happy that I was able to shoot some good rounds. I will use learn from it and this experience will be useful in future tournaments.”
 ⁃ Sean Lee

“My biggest challenge was that my mental was not strong enough as the first day I felt a lot of pressure. I overcame it by letting myself relax and getting myself to focus on my course guide instead of thinking of the scores. I am most proud of my approach and tee off shots. I think I won this week was because I was able to have stronger mental toughness. I also attribute my success to my parents.”
⁃ Shang Yu

“I am really proud of my mental game throughout the past 3 days, I managed to get over the bad shots quickly and stayed persistent through to the final shot.”
⁃ Daryl Low

“I feel that I won this week because I was much more accepting of bad holes. Even after I had one, I would motivate myself through self-talk, saying that there’s nothing I can do to change the past, so I can only move on and strive to play well for the remaining holes.”
 ⁃ Jillian Kuk

“My biggest challenge this week was dealing with the expectations that I have for myself. I had to constantly tell myself to stay in the present and enjoy being out there. I would attribute my success this week to how I managed myself on the course the last 3 days by playing percentage golf. I made sure that I stuck to my game plan and managed my emotions for the majority of the tournament.“
⁃ Justin Kuk

17 March 2021

It was the second round at the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge cum National Ranking Game played today at Seletar Country Cub and Sean Lee was in stellar form firing a 5 under par 67 (72, 67, 139) to maintain his lead over fellow SGA National squad player Brandon Han in the Boys A Division. Sean, who had made a couple of swing changes said, “I have been working really hard to improve my game and have made many sacrifices along the way. Looking forward to closing out the competition tomorrow!”

Sean is also leading the Men’s division of the National Ranking game which is played concurrently with this leg of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge. He leads Justin Kuk by 4 shots who returned to the clubhouse with a 2 over par round of 74 (69, 74, 143). Meanwhile in the Women’s National Ranking game, Aloysa Atienza is leading Samantha Marie Dizon after finishing her second round with a 3 over par 75 (72, 75, 147). Aloysa, who loves playing competitive golf and have missed the adrenaline and first tee jitters said, “It feels really good to be able to play and compete with everyone again.” “I have been giving my best at training and I guess now it’s just about trusting the process and enjoying the game,” she added. Samantha Marie Dizon is also relinquishing the opportunity to compete once again by firing a matching round of 3 over par 75 (75, 75, 150) to take the lead in the Girls A Division of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 3rd Leg.

Over at the Boys B Division, Daryl Low shot a cool 3 over par round of 75 (72, 75, 147) to sit 5 shots clear of Irvyn Tan who fought back bravely with a stellar 1 over-par round of 73 (79, 73, 152). Daryl who is glad to be competing again said, “I attribute my good performances so far to all the hard work, early mornings and late nights spent  honing my game.” “Let’s hope that it carries over to the final round tomorrow!”

In the Girl’s B Division, Angel Lim shot a 5 over par round of 77 (82, 77, 159) to give her the lead over SGA’s Futures Squad player Chen Xingtong who was impressive with her round of 79 (82, 79, 161). Angel mentioned that it was nice to see familiar faces again after a long time away from competitive golf and said, “I really enjoyed myself these past two rounds and was pretty calm throughout today’s round.” Angel was at even par for 15 holes but a costly mistake on the 6th hole forced her to record a 10 on her scorecard. “I guess I came into this competition with a different mindset which really helped me. I would laugh it off whenever I made a mistake and just try to enjoy the round” she added.
