The Singapore Golf Association (SGA) is proud to announce an additional local professional spot for next year’s SMBC Singapore Open. The aim is to promote our golf professionals to compete for and live the Olympic dream (as per our Multi-Year Sports Plan) through good performance and by improving their Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) ranking. The increase in the number of Singapore professional spot will also provide an added opportunity for local professionals. It is an increase of two professional spots from the 2018 edition, a total of 8 local professionals together with 3 amateurs will get a chance to lift the coveted Singapore Open trophy.

“The decision to increase our professional spot is to encourage our local professionals to continue to work towards their dream and hopefully the Singapore Open trophy will be lifted by a Singaporean for the first time. With Golf included in the Olympic Games, we aim towards Singapore being represented in the coming games” says SGA President Mr Ross Tan.

Mr Patrick Feizal Joyce, Senior Vice President, Golf (Asia) at Lagardère Sports added, “We commend the initiative taken by the SGA to both add an extra playing opportunity for a Singapore Professional in the SMBC Singapore Open and for implementing a qualification criteria that directs the young professionals along a path that will only better their development. We unwaveringly support the SGA’s ambition of seeing a Singaporean golfer in the Olympics in the future.”

“We would like to thank SGA for their effort in securing an extra spot for our local professionals. We recognize the effort made by the association and we on our part will work towards the betterment of the game of golf in Singapore. On behalf of my committee and members we appreciate the support for our players” added President of Singapore Professional Golf Association, Mr M. Murugiah.
