Nagoya, Japan, October 3: Shannon Tan secured Singapore’s first medal in golf at the Asian Games after winning the individual bronze medal following a playoff with China’s Yin Ruoning on Saturday.
The 22-year-old, who was making her Asian Games debut, carded a final round two-under-par 68 to finish regulation play with a four-day total of 14-under-par 266. With India’s Pranavi Sharath Urs having already secured gold after carding a 70 to finish one shot ahead of Shannon and Yin, it was down to the playoff to decide the silver and bronze medallists at the Kasugai Country Club East Course.
In the play-off on the first hole, Yin parred the hole to clinch the silver after Tan’s par putt lipped out, resulting in a bogey. Singapore’s other women’s representative, Chen Xingtong, signed off with a 70 to finish in outright 22nd place, while Amanda Tan closed with a 73 to finish in tied-25th place with Japan’s Mamika Shinchi.
In the women’s team standings, Singapore ended their campaign in tied-fourth alongside Korea and Thailand, while China took home top honours.
Hiroshi Tai, meanwhile, ended in tied-11th place in the individual men’s competition after carding rounds of 70, 70, 69 and 64. James Leow posted a 67 to end in tied-19th place as Singapore finished in eighth place in the team leaderboard with Korea securing the gold medal.
